About

Carla Kimball is the developer of the Intuitive Directions™ deck.  Her story about the origins of this deck can be found in her first blog post on this site.  This About page gives a little biography about her background both as a photographer and a teacher/facilitator/coach.

Photography Background

20140502-DSCN2471While a long time casual photographer, Carla’s more serious efforts began in 2009 when she started a daily photo blog called Revealed Presence.  She considered herself a photographer of ordinary things and her commitment with this daily blog, which continued thru 2014, was to post a photo every day and to couple it with a thought-provoking question.

This five-year practice has led Carla to develop two different sets of photography/question cards designed to deepen conversations.   Her Revealed Presence® Story Cards elicit stories to be shared in structured or informal conversations.  Her Intuitive Direction™ decks are designed to help give people new perspectives as they consider important issues in their personal or organizational lives.

Carla has exhibited in multiple venues throughout the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire, including Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Northern Stage, Artistree Gallery, AVA Gallery, Sculpturefest, and the Norris Cotton Cancer Center.  Her photographs are included in permanent collections at DHMC and Northern Stage as well as many individual collectors.

Carla also teaches a contemplative photography class, entitled Seeing with New Eyes, both to the general public and to people in difficult circumstances, most recently to a group of people with memory challenges and their care-partners at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Aging Resource Center.

With a master’s degree in Counseling/Psychology and Expressive Therapy, Carla is most interested in how photography can be used as a contemplative practice to relax the mind, create a sense of wonder, bring awareness to the ordinary beauty that surrounds us, and spark meaningful conversations and thoughtful inquiry.

Teaching, Facilitation and Coaching  Background

Carla is at heart a teacher, facilitator and coach.

Her teaching background dates back to the late 1980’s when after receiving her MBA at Rollins College in Florida, she became the founding director of the school’s first non-credit executive education program. As such she developed and co-instructed all computer related decision-making courses in this program.  In addition she taught MBA students, faculty and staff basic computer skills and team-taught a quantitative methods course in the graduate school.

Once she completed her second Master’s degree in counseling/psychology at Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, in 1993, she returned to that school as an adjunct faculty teaching a variety of psychology and arts related courses to undergraduates.

At the same time she became a yoga, dance and meditation teacher which led to her work as a stress management consultant and this eventually morphed into public speaking presence coaching.  From 1998 until 2017 Carla’s company, RiverWays Enterprises, offered public speaking workshops and coaching services to corporate clients and individuals including business leaders, teachers, and professionals in multiple fields.

Since 2004 Carla has been on the faculty of a 10-month leadership training program for community health workers sponsored by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation.
